Have you heard the news about a giant sperm whale were found dead on a beach in southern Spain on April 11 th 2018? The cause of the death horrified me. The giant creature is killed by plastic. Yes, you read it right. Scientist did research and found 64 pounds of plastic lodged in its stomach. But this poor sperm whale is not the only victim. According to WWF, 56% of the planet’s whale and dolphin species have consumed plastic, because they mistake plastic as squid.
Every year, the world produces 381 million tonnes in plastic waste. 50% of the waste is single use plastic and only 9% of that large sum of amount has ever been recycled. It is also estimated that global plastic waste will be doubled by 2034. More than 50% of that waste come from consumer use. Scientists estimate there are up to 8.3 billion platic straws end up on coastline around the world. The heart-breaking video of the sea turtle with a straw stuck in his nose launch the anti-plastic straw movement. In addition, 3.5 billion toothbrushes are sold worldwide each year. Every single plastic toothbrush takes around 500 years to decompose.Other type of complete waste is plastic utensils which won’t get recycled. It is estimated 40 billion of plastic utensils have been thrown away yearly after only single use.
